A small aircraft piloted by a West German citizen was shot down over the Soviet Union today after it violated Soviet airspace and refused repeated orders to land. According to an account released by the Soviet foreign ministry, the aircraft was a Cessna registered to an aircraft rental company in West Germany. The pilot’s name and condition was not released, however, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko called the incident a ‘reckless attempt by the West to challenge the readiness of the Soviet military.’
Poor Mathias Rust. Such a shame.
